Watching 13th Documentary: Angry, Shocked, and Inspired

Justice prison bars photo  / Unpslash Photo (free to use) After watching the documentary 13th, I didn't know how to feel about it at first. I was full of anger, shocked, and questioning everything I know because it made me realize how big racism and unfairness is in the United States, especially with the prison system. I knew the justice system wasn't all that great, but after watching the documentary made me see it is a lot more than "people doing crimes and getting punished." It captures how the system has been built over time in a way that's targeting Black Americans disturbingly.  The documentary is named the 13th because it relates to the 13th Admendment, which is what ended slavery. But what I'm having trouble understanding is that the amendment has exceptions. It's state...

When Protesting and Reprting Turn Into a Crime

Image
Don Lemon being interviewed   Watching the news video of Lemon saying "I will not be silenced" after being arrested for covering an anti-ICE protest honestly made me think differently about the world. Not just because with what happened at the protest, but because it shows how complicated politics and civil liberties are in play in real life. It made me think how quickly people can pick sides without thinking and proccessing things, which is what I remember with groupthink.  Politics are not all about elections or arguing about Democrats against Republicans. Politics is made from power. Talking about who has it, how they use it, and how it affects people. Immigration is one of the heaviest political topics in the United States right now because it involves government protection, national security, and human rights. That's why protests towards ICE...

What Should Be the Role of Citizens in Creating Public Policy?

Today politics are hard to avoid in this world. Whether it's on social media, news channels, protests, or conversations we have everyday, public policy affects every part of our lives and you might not see it. Going from healthcare to education to then immigration, and voting laws, people are always reminded and impacted by the governments choices. This asks an important topic on, what role should the people be with on public policy? Should we reflect our opinions on the voters, or be left to elect officials? All public officials job are to write and enforce laws, us citizens should have an active role towards benefiting our public policy. Our Constitution is built by the governments idea on power and how it comes from the people.  The United States Constitution starts off with "We the People" meaning the government gets its power from the people. Known as popular sovereignty, the governemnt only has power because the people allow it. The government gains authority from c...

Climate Action in the Florida Keys: Why Our Coastlines Can't Wait

Image
"Water doesn't rise because we want it to, it rises because we let it." That's the reality with my community here in the Florida Keys: every king tide, every hurricane season, every horrible flood reminds us we are living in climate change. And as the few of us who chose to live where the sun sets over the water, we all care about the home we share. But sadly caring isn't enough if we don't act.    King Tide flooding has become very common in the Florida Keys, turning once dry streets into complete saltwater alleyways.  A crisis Under the Surface Over the past decade, the Florida Keys has experienced a heavy increase in tidal flooding. Known as "sunny day flooding." King tides - the highest tides that happen due to the moon - now have water coming through the drains, into streets and in yards. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, sea levels along the Alantic coast near Key West have seen about 9 inches since 1950, and th...
